The offered scientific analysis of animal bone assemblages

incorporates the following procedures:

Primary Processing of the Material:

  • Determination of the bone fragments according to species, anatomical position, age and sex and electronical recording of the data,
  • Measuring of the bones, including reconstruction of recent breaks to facilitate analysis and measuring,
  • Interpretation of cut marks, traces of gnawing and pathology.

   Analysis:

  • Illustration of the processed data in tables, graphs and graphics by means of various computer programs,
  • Quantitative analysis of animal species and represented skeletal elements,
  • Analysis of age and sex structure of the different species,
  • Interpretation of the results in relation to archaeological finds, features and context,
  • Comparison of the archaeozoological results with other contemporary sites,
  • Placement of the findings within a cultural-historical framework.

Finally, the results are compiled into a manuscript ready for publication.

Areas of work:

So far, animal bone assemblages from Iron Age, Roman and especially Medieval sites in Germany have been studied and analyzed.

In close association with the German Mining Museum, analysis of the animal bone assemblages from the Bronze Age mining sites in Karnab (Uzbekistan) and Veshnoveh (Iran) is in progress.

Experience working in the field was gained in Egypt while studying the material from the Temple of Merenptah in Qurna and from a settlement of the Old and Middle Kingdoms in Kôm al-Ahmar/Sharuna.

During three campaigns, the animal bone assemblages from the Tübingen University excavations at the Bronze Age site of Tall Mozan in North-East Syria were recorded as staff archaeozoologist. The material is undergoing analysis.
